Transform Your Life With Dental Implants

Dental implants are the closest thing to natural teeth. They are strong and last a lifetime. The best part? You can socialise, smile and laugh with confidence again.

Certainly! Dental implants can be used to replace any number of missing teeth, whether it’s just a single tooth or a complete set.

The suitability of dental implants will depend on the condition of the bone in your jaw. Your dentist will arrange several special tests to determine the amount of remaining bone. If there is not enough bone or if it isn’t healthy enough, it may be necessary to perform a bone graft before implant placement.

The process of placing a dental implant is typically less complex than having a tooth extracted and is usually performed using a simple local anaesthetic. You won’t experience any pain during the procedure. However, as with any surgical intervention, you may feel some discomfort in the week following the surgery, similar to the discomfort experienced after a tooth extraction.

In cases where patients are particularly anxious or if the procedure is complex, your dentist may administer a sedative. General anaesthesia is rarely used for implant placements and is typically reserved for highly complex cases.

The duration of your dental implant treatment can vary, and your dental team will provide you with a rough timetable before the treatment begins.

In some cases, false teeth can be fitted immediately after the implant placement, known as “immediate implants.” It’s best to consult with your dental team to determine if this option is suitable for you.

Typically, the fitting of false teeth occurs approximately 3 to 4 months after the implants are placed. However, treatment times can vary, and your dental team will discuss your specific treatment timeline with you.

Your dental team will give you instructions on how to look after your implant. They may give you some painkillers after the surgery – or make sure you have some at home – to take over the next few days if you need them.

Once the implants are placed, the bone in your jaw needs time to grow and fuse with them. This process, called osseointegration, typically takes a few months. In some cases, the stability of the implants may allow for the fitting of false teeth sooner than expected. If you’re having one, two, or three teeth replaced, you may be provided with a temporary denture during the healing period. If you already have full dentures, you can continue wearing them while your implants heal. After the surgery, your dentures will require adjustments to ensure a proper fit, and a ‘healing cap’ will usually be placed over the implant site to protect it.
In most cases, teeth that are attached to dental implants can only be fitted and removed by your dentist. However, if you have removable dentures attached to the implants, you will be able to take them out for cleaning purposes.
The majority of implants are designed to closely resemble natural teeth, resulting in a seamless and natural-looking appearance.
If you have a single missing tooth, you will typically need one implant to support it. In cases where multiple adjacent teeth are missing, you may still require one implant per tooth. However, your dentist will assess your specific situation and discuss the best option for you. It’s possible that with two or more implants, they can support multiple teeth. Your dentist will guide you towards the most suitable solution for your needs.
Implants are typically not available on the NHS. However, they are offered as a private treatment option. While the cost of implants may be slightly higher than that of conventional private dental treatments involving crowns and bridges, they often provide a more cost-effective and satisfactory long-term solution.
